Barbara Colaciello’s Story Slam, a monthly event located in Jacksonville, Florida’s CoRK Arts District, invites you to experience storytelling in a very special and personal way. In an intimate room that is Babs’ studio, participants share personal stories focused around a particular topic or item. On October 18th, that topic was, “Socks.” The stories were 5-7 mins in length.
The set opened with a touching story about an unlikely friendship that began in a Karaoke bar in Five Points, a neighborhood in Jacksonville. The storyteller took us through the ups and downs of their friendship, painting a vivid picture of the unique character of his friend until we all felt like we knew him personally. The friendship ended with his friend’s tragic suicide, the bequeaths of a beloved article of clothing, and the socks that finally pulled the outfit together.
There were stories of family bonds, life-changing events and relationships, fights, internal struggles, falling in love, and ended with a comic tale of a little boy who hated socks and finally found his peace on a yoga mat.
Many of the storytellers are students at Babs’ studio, Babs’Labs, where she teaches the art of improvisation, guiding students to discover their voices, tell their stories, create collaboratively, and grow as leaders. Babs is an accomplished actress and advertising director, having worked with Andy Warhol, Larry Moss, Peter Flood and on Interview Magazine, Vanity Fair, and the book Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close-Up.
